Sun City

About

The AGCRA Sun City Chapter is located at Fort Bliss, Texas. Fort Bliss is a U.S. Army post in the states of New Mexico and Texas, with its headquarters located in El Paso. The fort is named in honor of LTC William Bliss, a mathematical genius who was the son-in-law of President Zachary Taylor. The Sun City Chapter encompasses units from FORSCOM (1st Armored Division, 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, 5th Armored Brigade); TRADOC (Joint Modernization Command, U.S. Army Sergeant’s Major Academy); MEDCOM (William Beaumont Army Medical Center, 31st Combat Support Hospital); NETCOM (106th Signal Brigade); and MEPCOM (El Paso MEPS), just to name a few. The city of El Paso is called “Sun City” because on average, the city has 302 days of sun every year! The beauty of our desert sun really sets El Paso apart - it’s always bright, cheerful, and welcoming, much like the Soldiers stationed at Fort Bliss. The El Paso - Las Cruces - Juarez international metroplex has a population of 2.7 million people and it is the largest bi-national region in the Western Hemisphere. The original AGCRA Chapter at Fort Bliss was called the Rio Grande Chapter, which transitioned to the Iron Soldier Chapter upon the arrival of the 1st Armored Division from Germany in 2011. The Chapter is now called the Sun City Chapter in order to pay homage to all of the AG Corps Soldiers and HR professionals in the Fort Bliss area, as the City of El Paso does to its own neighbors.
