On 5 February 2026, the AGCRA Potomac Chapter hosted a leadership development session featuring senior leaders from the Army G-1’s Directorate of Military Personnel Management (DMPM). Brigadier General Johnson and Sergeant Major Grant shared strategic insights on the evolving role of Army Human Resources in an era defined by rapid change, innovation, and data-driven decision-making.
Strategic Demands on Army Human Resources
Brigadier General Johnson emphasized the growing expectations placed on HR professionals under current Department of Defense and Army priorities. He highlighted that HR leaders are often the sole HR representative in senior forums alongside the Army G-3 or the Chief of Staff of the Army, making mastery of the profession essential.
He stressed the importance of clearly communicating HR’s relevance to operations and understanding how operational requirements drive new HR processes, policies, and capabilities. In these environments, HR must be prepared to operate at the strategic level and directly support senior leader decision-making.
Brigadier General Johnson also noted that failing to adapt quickly and embrace emerging technologies and innovations creates operational risk that ultimately impacts the warfighter. When necessary, challenging existing policies and procedures is critical to meeting senior leader intent and ensuring mission success.

Policy Transparency and Force Impact
Sergeant Major Grant provided insight into DMPM’s expansive policy portfolio, which spans topics from uniform updates to grade plate and end-strength analysis. He emphasized the importance of transparency in policy development and implementation, particularly in clearly communicating the “why” behind decisions that affect the force. Building trust through transparency ensures Soldiers understand how policies support readiness and long-term force management.

Embracing Data, AI, and Advanced Analytics
Both leaders reinforced the need for Army HR to fully embrace data, artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics. Leveraging modern tools—including large language models and high-quality data—enables more informed, unbiased, and timely decision-making. These capabilities are essential for advising commanders and improving Soldier care across the force.

HR’s Role in Strategic Risk and Readiness
The session reinforced that Army Human Resources plays a central role in the Army’s strategic risk calculus. By moving faster, working smarter, and embracing innovation, HR professionals help mitigate risk, shape the future force, and enable readiness today.
